Wine Notes: (Local RE and Wine News)

Halter Ranch: Halter Ranch has requested a conditional use permit and it has been granted for a major change in the landscape of the West Adelaida wine area.  They will in Phase I build a new winery building and crush pad area of 35,680 square feet.  Also included are caves and a covered bridge over Las Tablas Creek.  It certainly sounds like an exciting enhancement to a winery that is producing some excellent wines.  Phase II will include a new tasting room of 6500 Square Feet.  All of this was approved at the June 14th meeting of the San Luis Obispo County Planning Commission Meeting.

Land Use in San Luis Obispo County:  The article above discusses a Conditional Use Permit for Halter Ranch.  I'm sure many are wondering what that actually means.  A Winery or Tasting Room would normally be considered industrial or retail land usage.  Considering most County land is zoned agricultural, the county would not normally allow those types of facilities on agricultural land, but in this case land use regulations consider Wineries and Tasting Room to be extensions of Agricultural usage.  We will explore the details of this in future issues.

Cooking Corner:  (Personal recipes and views on Cooking Paso Style)
Wild Pig:  The Paso Robles area offers hunting opportunity for many types of wild game.  Deer, Turkey, and Wild Boar are in abundance. Although I don't hunt, it's good to know people who do.  I recently was given a wild pig so I thought I would share my cooking method for this unusual feast.
I normally use a good rub on pork,  but I felt a rub would be inappropriate with the flavor of wild game.  So in this case I smoked the pig in the Wine Barrel Smoker which I discussed in the August 2006 Newsletter without any spices.  I served it with my special recipe barbeque sauce from the July 2006 Newsletter.  I normally like a Pinot with the delicate flavor of Pork, but in the case of Wild Pig, I highly recommend a much heavier bodied wine.  On the lighter side a Syrah but this meal can easily stand up to a good Cab.

Paso Style Living Real Estate: (Real Estate market conditions in Paso Wine Country)
I wanted to take this time to recap some of my predictions and comments on the local Real Estate market.  1) Well priced homes are selling:  I saw 2 homes come on the market this month and enter Escrow within 2 weeks. They were priced right.  2) Quality Homes are selling and that drives up median price: The CA State statistics show this,  Santa Barbra Coast Median price is Up,  High Desert Median price is down. 3) There are some good deals to be had: I've seen many homes go for $300,000 below asking price.
