Upcoming Events:
Amgen Tour of California

To some it's just a bunch of guys out bike riding, to others it's a major professional sporting event.  The Tour of California was a major success last year as a major professional bike race and a tourism draw for all of San Luis Obispo County.  This leg of the race will leave Seaside, travel down Route 1, passing Hearst Castle and Big Sur with the leg's finish on Monterey street in San Luis Obispo.

The Mission Plaza in San Luis will be the place to watch and cheer as the Tour of California completes the SLO leg of its 8-day race thru California Thursday, February 22.  The race is modeled after the "Tour de France". 16 professional cycling teams from around the world will participate.

Wine Corner:  (Review of local Paso Wines)
Niner, Sangiovese 2003, Bootjack Ranch Vineyard

Niner is an up and coming winery.  Pam and Dick Niner have been investing in Paso Robles wine with the goal of producing some of the best wines available.  This wine is sourced from their Blackjack vineyard located on the Paso Eastside.  Niner Winery and Hospitality center in under county review for construction on Hwy 46 West on the property that is commonly  known as Heart Hill due to the distinctive heart shape an oak grove makes on the hillside.

I found this Sangiovese to be a very good wine.  It required some time to breathe and open up, but it is well balanced with sufficient tannin that it should age well.

Local News: (Local RE and Wine News)
The Mastantuono Winery on Hwy 46 West, has sold for an undisclosed sum to Ron Donati of the Donati Family Vineyards in Paicines, Calif. The Donati Family which owns a 1000 acre vineyard in San Benito County will be changing the name to reflect the Donati name.

Winemaker for Donati Family Vineyards is  Dan Kleck, owner of Silver Stone Wines, and consulting winemaker to more than half a dozen other local wineries.

Cooking Corner:  (Personal recipes and views on Cooking Paso Style)

I'm a big fan of Pork, (the other white meat) this months recipe is Apple Pork Chops.
2 pork chops, thick Sliced, 1 inch
  small Onion Chopped
  3 Cloves Garlic , chopped
  2 Small Apples, Diced
Season the chops with salt, pepper, and Jamaican Allspice.  Brown in a warm skillet in Olive oil.  Add onion and garlic, then apple.  allow to cook slowly until done,.  Remember it's easy to overcook pork.

I'm personally a big fan of Pinot Noir with Pork.  It's the perfect match,  a lighter red meat with a lighter red wine.
Enjoy

Wine Trivia: (A little local or wine trivia)
Champagne glasses have undergone dramatic changes in shape over the years.  The Champagne flute is most common today, but the historical champagne glass was a much wider, shallower glass.  The shape is said to be molded from the breasts of a famous lady:
  a) Queen Elizabeth
  b) Marie Antoinette
  c) Helen of Troy
  d) Cleopatra

Paso Style Living Real Estate: (Real Estate market conditions in Paso Wine Country)
Last month I indicated that anecdotal indications suggest the local Real Estate market is starting to make a turn.  The numbers are beginning to bear that out this month.  Average selling price for all areas are up  from December.  Inventory levels are down as many sellers who were just testing the water have pulled from the market and more homes have sold.  Inventory levels are generally less than 6 months which starts to put us back into a sellers market condition.

The FED has held interest rates,  if we truly are at the bottom of the curve there is no better time to invest than now. .  (Single Family Homes, SFRSB)
