Wine Notes: (Local RE and Wine News)
Paso Robles Wine Festival:
This past month's annual Paso Robles Wine Festival was the best yet.  Each year the event's organization matures,  but The Wine!  Yes, The Wines, all the wines I tasted were very good.  I've attended the event for many years now, and I have to admit in the past there were some wines which were marginal at best,  but this year all the wines were very good to excellent.
My favorite from the event was  the Cab from a new small winery, Ecluse.  The wine has a full balanced flavor and will probably age very well.  I felt it was one of the best Cabs I've tasted in a while!

An Evening of Music and Wine:
It's almost Fair time!  The California Midstate Fair!                        (con't)

For those not familiar with this event,  it's a time to enjoy some of the best musical performers at one location in the country.  Most important is Friday night, August 1st.  Boz Skaggs will perform for the Evening of Music and Wine.  By far, the best event anywhere to enjoy great music and excellent wine.  www.midstatefair.com

Paso Style Living Real Estate: (Real Estate market conditions in Paso Wine Country)
The statistics for this month are very similar to last month.  Inventory level are almost exactly the same; Average selling prices are close; and mortgage rates are still very low.  This is good news compared to what we've seen for the past year.
I wanted to express my viewpoints on the national economy which is at the crutch of what's affecting Real Estate.  We all know the complaints of jobs moving over seas, the price of oil (denominated in US$s) has skyrocketed;  and, of course, the Real Estate "Bust".  I think the problems all points back to the mortgage business.  Here's my reasoning.  Much of the US economy has been dominated by Mortgage Backed Securities (MBS) over the past several years.  The financial markets were fueled by the MBSs paying high returns with a sense of minimal or no risk.  These MBSs have sucked dollars which otherwise may have been invested in factories, jobs and infrastructure because of the high rate of return and understated risks.  Building and selling products is a risky business and returns are not always great.  These basic industries that drive the engine of the US economy have been bypassed in search of quick returns.  Any business has to always look at it's return on capital investment compared to the safe return of making the same investment in financial instruments.
I'm sure we will see a shift as the markets learn again what is considered a "safe" investment.
